Description:
This beautifully detailed pair of Chinese dragons are in an imitation Cochin Ceramic design. The Figurines feature huge amounts of details such as individual scales, hairs, eye lashes and teeth. The dragons float on beds of multi-coloured clouds and are painted in glossy black, yellow, red, purple, green and white. Each dragon holds a red pearl in one claw and is set on a lacquer-look solid base.
Cochin Ceramics originated from a folk art in Guangdong, and is now a craft adopted by Taiwan. Cochin is a style of glossy painted ceramic that was usually used for decorating walls, roof ridges and for decorating figurines and is distinguished by brightly coloured multi-layer glazes.
In Chinese folklore, the Dragon is an extremely powerful creature that is said to symbolise auspicious power. As a Yang force, the Dragon is often pictured with its Yin counterpart; the Phoenix. The dragon is seen as being so powerful that it can control the weather, and is in particular associated with water as the bringer of rain.
