A pair of waving lucky cats (maneki neko) adorn this pair of ornate cloisonne Chinese Meditation Balls. The balls feature a waving lucky cat on each ball, one with its left paw raised, and another with the right paw raised, and come presented in a brocade box. The balls are mainly enamelled in a glittery pearlescent green, with brass outlining for the cloisonne. Little details such as whiskers and claws on the cats make this a beautiful gift for anyone interested in Chinese alternative health aids.
These Chinese Health Balls are more traditionally known as Chinese Meditation Balls or Baoding Balls after the prefecture in which they are thought to have been first created during the Ming dynasty. They are an exercise aid to improve manual dexterity, strength and circulation. The balls are rotated in the hand at an even pace, keeping the balls in permanent contact with one another. Skilled users can turn more than two balls at any one time and some believe that if done correctly, the balls should not chime at all.
It is believed by some practitioners of alternative medicine, that use of these health balls can improve wellbeing by stimulating and massaging acupressure points on the hands. It is believed that thes health balls can help to reduce high blood pressure, reduce arthritis in the fingers and wrist and effects of diseases of old age. These balls can also serve as a distraction for those who wish to give up smoking or have a tendency to fidget.
