They are a popular cultural icon in the Far East, where they often sit at the entrances of businesses to beckon custom and money. They originated from Japan, which is why they are often depicted holding a Japanese gold coin called a Koban. The characters often inscribed on the coin (千万両) indicate that it is worth ten million ryō; an early Japanese monetary unit.
