Lanterns are a popular icon in Chinese culture, and play an important role in a number of Chinese festivals throughout the year. There are two prominent lantern festivals in the year, one to mark the end of 15 days of celebration during Chinese New Year, and the other is the chinese Mid-Autumn Festival. Each festival coincides with a full moon, when children go outside to play with lanterns, and many colourful lanterns are hung out for people to appreciate.
